Just over a year ago, a tragedy was averted on the Wisconsin River at Wausau’s Gilbert Park by the swift and effective action of four of our citizens.
Tom and Kathleen Tryber were launching their fishing boat at the Gilbert Park ramp. The car rolled backward into the river and was caught by the current and dragged, along with the trailer and boat, out into the river. Kathleen was trapped in the sinking vehicle.
Through the efforts of the Wausau Golden Kiwanis Club, these local heroes were honored with the Kiwanis International Foundation Medal of Valor. Presentation took place at a regular meeting of the Golden K.
The two young ladies, who came to the aid of Mrs. Kathleen Tryber, Emily Duncanson and Courtney Flanders, are now students at the University of Wisconsin—Madison.
Two local men also helped in the rescue of Mrs. Tryber. John Martinez had just turned into the Gilbert Boat Landing parking area when the emergency began to unfold. Alfredo Marrero was already at the Park. Both men entered the river and helped extricate Mrs.Tryber from her rapidly submerging automobile.
After the ceremony, Golden Kiwanis hosted a coffee and cake reception allowing members and guests to meet the award recipients and the Trybers.
