HeartKids Family Camp

Oct 21, 2009

HeartKids Family Camps is a self-catered camp for families of children with heart conditions.  Eight Kiwanis clubs in the Melbourne, Australia, area (Division 6 of the Australia District) sponsor this camp, Brian Mates, Bruce Entwisle and Ed Wilson volunteer their time to coordinate.

It was held at Candlebark Farm (a school camp facility) in Healesville (this area was recently affected by the fires in February) over the weekend of 18th /20th September. Eighteen families, comprising of 45 children and 32 adults, attended the fun-filled camp. This special weekend gave the HeartKids families immense pleasure, as spending time with their heart-patient child and family is not taken for granted.

The weekend also allowed families to network with one another, which also helps families support each other. HeartKids is a family-support organization that supports children, such as those who attended this camp, as they face the roller coaster ride of childhood heart disease. These families endure so many medical challenges that it is vital they receive ongoing support, understanding and information.
