We all have watched the ABC television show, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” haven’t we? Most of us probably have longed to be on the receiving end of one of those big, beautiful homes. How wonderful to be chosen!
Others, however, long to help out—to be the ones building that beautiful home for a deserving family. That was the case last month with the Kiwanis Aktion Club of Merritt Island, Florida. Aktion Club is one of Kiwanis’ Service Leadership Programs and consists of adults with disabilities who are focused on doing service in their communities.
On January 12, Aktion members braved the cold weather to volunteer their time and energy to help with the construction of a new home for a local family. They were issued their official Extreme Makeover volunteer T-shirts and hard hats. They were assigned various duties, including moving lumber and metal scaffolding, landscaping and digging trenches.
Some people may think Aktion Club members would be on the receiving end of an “Extreme Makeover.” In this case, they were giving of themselves to help make a better life for a family in their community. The world is a better place when we give of ourselves to help those in need. Great job, Kiwanis Aktion Club of Merritt Island.
The episode aired on ABC, Sunday, February 13, 2011. Watch the episode online here.
