When a call went out for volunteers to escort contestants in an upcoming beauty pageant, the Swainsboro, Georgia, Kiwanis Club had no shortage of volunteers. Club members were honored to accompany nursing home residents in the second annual Scott Health and Rehab Beauty Pageant.
“Any female resident can be a contestant,” says Kay Peacock, the event’s coordinator and a Swainsboro Kiwanis Club member.
Judges select a Ms. Congeniality, two runners-up and the Scott Health and Rehab Queen. This year’s winner was 91-year-old Katherine Soles, who became eligible to compete in the statewide Ms. Georgia Health Care Association Pageant (sponsored in part by the Kiwanis Club of Peachtree, Atlanta, Georgia).
The association believes the pageants promote a positive public image of nursing home residents and their potential for living fulfilling lives.
“We get feedback from the community all year about how much they appreciate us doing the pageant,” Peacock says. “A lot of people from the area come, the contestants’ families come, and the home gets a lot of publicity. And they’re cute as a button!” — Cindy Dashnaw
