Egg-stravaganza

Mount Olive, New Jersey, Kiwanians don’t walk on eggshells when they stage their annual Easter egg hunt for kids. They pull off the event with great gusto, entertaining about 300 children each year for the time-honored egg-hunting tradition.

The Kiwanis club took over the event from a now-defunct Jaycees club about a decade ago, building it into a much-anticipated community event.

“In its earliest years, the turnout was low and the event cost money as a service project,” says president Brian Siegelwax. “As attendance grew, the service project also became a good fund-raiser, meaning we can donate hundreds of dollars to worthy causes—even after entertaining hundreds of children.”

Event sponsors donate candy and prizes, and profits come from a US$3-per-child registration fee. Polaroid photos with the Easter Bunny bring in $3 for one picture or $5 for two. In addition to providing fun for kids and fund-raising, the club uses the egg hunt to collect nonperishable food for underprivileged people.
