Andrew Vance and Janesville, Wisconsin, Aktion Club members are good friends. Vance formerly worked at KANDU Industries, helping the Kiwanis-family members and other clients develop job skills. Currently, however, Vance is stationed in Iraq as a United States Marine.

On Kiwanis One Day, the Aktion Club members remembered their friend and other Marines by boxing up 88 care packages for shipment to Rhamadi, Iraq.

Working side-by-side with the volunteers was Vance’s mother, Jean Vance, packing boxes with cereal, sandwich spreads, condiments, granola bars, powdered drink mixes, crackers, microwavable popcorn, candy, toiletries, stationery, pens, sports equipment, socks, music CDs, phone cards, batteries, and much more.

“It was really fun to do,” says Aktion Club president Nicole Bole. “We’re happy we had a chance to help. We hope the soldiers enjoy the care packages.”

Each care package contained a letter of thanks to the troops and a poem, written by Aktion Club president Nicole Bole.

Heroes

Heroes come in many sizes and shapes.

Heroes are the people, who are here for us the most.

Heroes were there that September day.

Heroes are in the Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force.

Heroes are the police officers, who guard the streets.

Heroes are the firefighters, who help us in need.

Heroes are the supervisors at work.

Heroes are your mom and dad, who are always there.

Heroes are the adult family people, who give us a place to sleep.

Heroes are your aunts and uncles, who are always there for us.

Heroes are the program case managers, who help us on our feet.

Now you see there are heroes in every place, so we can be free, so just believe.
