Kiwanis in the News
Fundraising is their game. Jeannette Cornier hikes to Paradise Recreation Center every Sunday with her bag of colored daubers, elephant clip-on doll with the “I Love Bingo” T-shirt, and lucky troll. Her trip from her home in Village Del Mar (Florida) is not only for friends and her love of the game, but also to support area children.
The Kiwanis Club of Lady Lake (Florida) hosts bingo every Sunday to raise money for numerous children’s programs, including little league, soccer, Bring Up Grades (BUG), Reading is Fundamental, and K-Kids, says Duke Tallarico, president-elect of the club.
“Everybody knows what they’re supporting when they come here,” Duke says. “They know what this is for—for the kids—what we support. It’s included in their priorities.”—The Villages Daily Sun
Altruism reaches Haiti, Chernobyl. The Kiwanis Club of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, recently sent US$500 to a new Kiwanis club in Jeremi, Haiti, in support of its Priority One projects. David Latuor, president of the Haitian club, says, “The day has been a success; we have 500 children (we care for). We are very happy, because the Kiwanis club has taken this first step in our community.”
The Dartmouth club is no stranger to programming aimed at International development, according to its president, Tim Olive. The club conducts a yearly exchange program for children of Chernobyl, site of a 1986 disaster at a nuclear power plant.—Dartmouth Weekly News
Community service a work of art. What started as a way to give artists in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, a venue to show and sell their work has grown into an annual institution, drawing hundreds of art lovers. The Prince Albert Kiwanis club has been a partner in staging the annual Kyla Art Show and Sale for almost 25 years and has seen attendance grow to more than 600 per show, considered a lot for a nonsports event.
“The people who come know that it is a social event and it is also a fundraiser for Kiwanis,” notes Jack Jensen, president of the Kyla local art group.—Prince Albert Daily Herald
