Fun written in sand

Kiwanians in the New Zealand-South Pacific District’s Division 9 tapped their “inner children” by making sand castles on the beach in celebration of Kiwanis’ 91st anniversary this past January 21.

New Zealand Kiwanians prove that fun is a serious priority when it comes to creating and castles commemorating Kiwanis’ 91st birthday.

Dubbed the Division 9 Sand Castle Challenge, the event was, according to Tokoroa, New Zealand, Kiwanian Kathryn Glennon, “a big party (with) lots of swimming and splashing and fun in the sun.” Not to mention, a sand castle competition.

“Armed with buckets and spades and water pistols, we headed to the beach and built sand castles,” Kathryn says. “I was really amazing to see the club’s interpretations of the instructions: to make a sand castle with a ‘K.’”

The final creations included the word “Kiwanis,” a birthday cake topped with a “K” and “91,” and elaborate castle surrounding a “K,” and a monolith documenting (the district’s) great achievements over the past few years.”

“Anyone going past (the word ‘Kiwanis’ in the sand) would see it and know we were there,” Kathryn says. “Even after the tide had come and gone, it was still there the next day. People had walked past but had not destroyed it.”
