Hope Markes, a member of the Kiwanis Club of Hopewell in Hanover, Jamaica, in the Eastern Canada and Caribbean District, was elected at the virtual May 14-15, 2021 Eastern Canada and Caribbean District Convention and will serve a three-year term beginning October 1, 2021.

Hope was District Governor in 2013-2014 and previously served as Lieutenant Governor. At the district level, she was a member of the Strategic Planning Committee and was Regional Vice Chair for The Formula. She has also served on Membership and Education committees. At the club level, she was president of her Kiwanis club from 2001-2003 and 2015-2017. She served as Secretary and Chair of the Fundraising, Membership and Interclub committees and was Director and Club advisor for Circle K International, the Kiwanis service leadership club for college and university students. She has also served as Public Relations advisor.

Hope has been honored with George F. Hixson and Walter Zeller fellowships for her support of the Kiwanis Children’s Fund and The Eliminate Project. She is a Mel Osborne Fellow, a Champion for Children and holds the Godfrey Dyer Medallion.

Hope believes clubs and members should encourage a welcoming environment. She has mentored and encouraged new members to engage in club projects and social events that best match their needs and talents. She worked on developing a strategic plan and with a trained team to identify communities and demographics where new clubs could be located.

Hope said her Kiwanis moment — the moment she knew Kiwanis was for her — was revealed during her term as lieutenant governor. “My passion has never ceased, even when there are challenges,” she said.

Outside Kiwanis, she served as Board member of the Hanover Community Development Commission, Board member of Financial Sector Adjustment Company of Jamaica; as an Ambassador/Convenor of the University of the West Indies, Western Campus; Board Chair of the Sandy Bay Primary and Junior High School, and Board member of the Parish Hospital and Vice Chair of Bethel Infant School.

Additionally, she served as Committee chair for the Sugar Cane Ball of Hanover Charities; Director of the Caribbean Health Outreach; is a Founder and Committee chair of the Welfare Committee/Lay Magistrates Association, Hanover Chapter; and served on the planning committee for her high school alumni class of 1975.

She is the owner of Hope Markes Villas and Property Management. She enjoys traveling, crossword puzzles, playing tennis, reading and gardening along with spending time with family, friends and her pets.
