Club grows fundraising to help more kids

Tellico Plains Kiwanis Club finds way to add money to service budget to help more kids When Joyce McDaniel gave an autistic boy a modified iPad to help him communicate, she knew her Kiwanis club was making a positive difference in the life of that child.

The Tellico Plains (Tennessee) Kiwanis Club wants to help more children thrive, prosper and grow, but like with most Kiwanis clubs, funding is limited. To raise more money for their service budget, the Tellico Plains club started a flag subscription program.

"It's just a great community event," McDaniel said. "Any monies we can make on a project go to helping these kids."

Club uses flag subscription program to boost service fund The 25-member club in the community of 880 people added US$602 to its coffers this first year with the fundraiser. McDaniel, the club's secretary, said she expects that number to keep climbing as the club works out the kinks.

The flag subscription program works like this: for a club-determined subscription fee, a Kiwanis club provides and installs the flag or flagpole on the customer’s residential or business property, properly stores it afterward, and then arranges for delivery and pick-up for the next holiday.

The Tellico Plains Kiwanis Club sells the subscription for US$25 dollars and keeps the flags on display from May 25 to July 5.

"A lot of the subscriptions are from individuals who wanted to honor a veteran or an individual," McDaniel said. "It's breathtaking when you drive down Cherohala Skyway and see all the colors."

The club also includes a notecard with each flag that lists the donor's name and whether the flag is being displayed in honor of anyone.

"We're still growing our membership and trying to think of ways to raise money," McDaniel said. "Even these small fundraisers go to help a child in some way."
Kids—like that little boy with autism who can now communicate with others because of the Tellico Plains Kiwanis Club—need Kiwanis in your community and communities around the world.
