Joe Mure creates “The Little North Pole” every year to dazzle and amaze the children in his New York community. This year, his display won a US$50,000 prize for an organization close to his heart.

On ABC’s December 3, 2018, episode of “The Great Christmas Light Fight,” Mure said he will donate his prize to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Every year, Mure collects donations for JRDF and estimates “The Little North Pole” has raised more than $2 million for the research foundation.

Mure, the immediate past president of the Kiwanis Club of Bensonhurst and Bay Ridge, has been creating the magic outside his Rockaway Beach home for 23 years. He told Kiwanis magazine in 2012 that he started this tradition after he missed Christmas with his young daughter because of work obligations. He vowed to never let that happen again.

"The Little North Pole" is more than a light show — it's a street party and fundraiser. Thousands of people show up the night he turns on the lights. There are performances on a stage with dancers doing kicks and twirls, while kids keep watch for Santa.

Mure also donates toys and food with help from his Kiwanis club and other clubs in Brooklyn and Queens. Key Clubbers get in on the action too — dishing out food and keeping young kids entertained.

"We want to put a lot of smiles on a lot of faces," he says. "That's what we do."
