Kiwanis delivers a happy holiday to many families

Kiwanis delivers a happy holiday to many familiesAn 8-year-old girl wants curtains. Her 13-year-old brother asked for underwear. Their older brother requested new bedding.

“Their list to Santa breaks my heart,” says Vicki Hermansen. “So many children ask Santa for toys. These kids asked Santa for underwear and curtains. I’m a Kiwanian. Like the more than 200,000 other Kiwanians, we’re here to help kids thrive, prosper and grow.”

Hermansen, public relations manager for Kiwanis International and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Indy: It’s 5 o’clock Somewhere, put out the call for help making Christmas merry for the Indianapolis, Indiana, family.

Colleagues in the communications department responded. Everything and more on the kids’ lists were wrapped, tagged and delivered to the family. They got the “wants” on their list, such as blankets, sheets, pillows and towels — but they also got some toys, board games and items for family night.

“The staff believes in the mission of this organization as much as the members,” says Karen Chakiry, creative manager. “We know as well as anyone that kids need Kiwanis.”

Clubs have been posting on Facebook and Twitter all holiday season about their food drives and Santa gatherings.

“Many kids — near and far — will have a happy holiday because of Kiwanis members,” says Steven Hadt, public relations specialist. “We really are an organization serving the children of the world.”
