Jaak Michiels

Kiwanis International mourns the death of Jaak Michiels. The governor of the Belgium-Luxembourg District died Friday, January 11, 2019. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Ghent Seaport 2000.

Michiels joined Kiwanis nearly 40 years ago and served in various roles including club president and lieutenant governor. He was chosen as the governor-elect in September 2017 and began serving as district governor October 1, 2018.

"We will miss Governor Jaak and his dedication to Kiwanis," says Kiwanis International President Florencio "Poly" Lat. "Every day, Governor Jaak worked to improve the lives of children in Belgium, Luxembourg and around the world. He will be missed."

Friends describe Michiels as a dear friend and a great Kiwanian who frequently shared his sense of humor.

The 68-year-old dedicated this Kiwanis year to being "A window on the future" where all children thrive, prosper and grow.

"Governor Jaak focused on helping children. He wanted all kids to live to their full potential," says Lat. "He was a true Kiwanis leader."

He is survived by his wife Linda.
