Stuart Playground

INDIANAPOLIS – When Kali Flood joined a video call with Kiwanis International and Landscape Structures this week, she anticipated a few follow-up questions about the entry the Kiwanis Club of Stuart, Florida, submitted for a playground contest. The annual Legacy of Play contest, sponsored by Kiwanis International and Landscape Structures, awards US$25,000 in playground equipment to a Kiwanis club that best demonstrates the need for a new playground.

Flood raised her eyebrows and smiled from ear to ear when she learned the call wasn't for more questions, but that her club had won the contest.

“What? Oh my gosh, that is amazing,” Flood said. “Thank you so much. We had some stiff competition, and this is the best news!”

The club will install the playground equipment in Kiwanis Park in downtown Stuart, a place that Flood says is a sanctuary for Martin County families. It will provide an area for older children, completing the goal of giving children of all ages and abilities a safe and fun place to play.

“There are very few outdoor spaces that appeal to children aged 8 and older and we want to bring the joy and fun to the whole family. All ages and abilities are welcome — inclusion is what makes Kiwanis Park in Stuart a destination park to visit,” she said.

“Five years ago, Landscape Structures helped us build a barrier-free playground for handicap accessibility,” Flood said. “In December, we’re expanding with our Tot Lot and Sensory Sensitive play area for children on the autism spectrum, along with reaching children with visual and auditory impairments.”

Landscape Structures and Kiwanis International have sponsored the Legacy of Play contest for eight years. The contest goal is to encourage Kiwanis clubs to bring play and playgrounds to their communities, providing a legacy of play for future generations.

Landscape Structures, headquartered in Delano, Minnesota, is the leading manufacturer of commercial playground equipment. Kiwanis International is a global service organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and operates from Indianapolis, Indiana.

“On behalf of Landscape Structures, I would like to congratulate the Kiwanis Club of Stuart on winning the Legacy of Play contest,” said Pat Faust, president of Landscape Structures. “We are thankful for the club’s commitment to creating an inclusive space to welcome community members of all ages and abilities. We look forward to working together with Kiwanis members and the City of Stuart to complete their vision of creating a destination playground.”

The Stuart club, which has 45 members, will work with the city, Tykes and Teens, the Martin County Library system, ARC and Key Clubs. The city owns the land and will be responsible for maintenance and safety; the club will help with clean-up and identifying any needed repairs. Plans call for the playground to be installed and ready for children by October 2022.

“Kiwanis clubs are best at helping children in their communities, and a playground is a wonderful way to make sure children are active and stay healthy,” said Peter Mancuso, 2021-22 Kiwanis International president. “We are proud of the efforts of the Kiwanis Club of Stuart for providing a safe, inclusive play space for children.”

Clubs that entered the contest but did not win the US$25,000 in playground equipment will receive a complimentary OmniSpin® Spinner, valued at US$8,500, if they continue their playground plans with Landscape Structures. And next year the organizations will launch another contest for a Kiwanis club to receive an Aquatix® AquaSmart™ Package splash pad, valued at up to US$50,000.
