Raising money with food

| Mar 30, 2021

Food fundraisers are popular in communities around the world — but what happens during a pandemic? See how four clubs in Europe created socially distanced fundraisers based on local delicacies.

BELGIAN SEAFOOD BUFFET

For several years, the Kiwanis Club of Vielsalm in Belgium has raised money with an impressive seafood buffet of crab legs, oysters, lobster, fish, shrimp and clams. In 2019, the fundraiser brought in 13,000 euros, and 85% of the profits benefited an oncology service for teens, baby care in Senegal, masks for youth and more.

However, when the COVID-19 pandemic threatened the fundraiser’s success, club members volunteered to drive refrigerated trucks of food up to an hour away to safely deliver meals. The club increased the number of meals delivered by 140% this year.

FOOD TO HELP A FAMILY

The Kiwanis Club of Issoire, France, sold and delivered meals of choucroute (sauerkraut with meats and potatoes). The proceeds supported a family with twins who have lymphoblastic leukemia.

TAKE THE TASTING ONLINE

In Germany, the Kiwanis Club of European Professionals held an online whiskey tasting to raise money for its camp for children with cancer and their siblings. The club hired professionals to lead participants through the tasting and received 10% of the profits and an additional 260 euros from the auction of a rare bottle of whiskey the club donated to the cause.

MAKE THE MEAL TO GO

When its annual goulash fundraiser at the Christmas market was canceled, the Kiwanis Club of Frick, in Switzerland, pivoted to a “goulash-to-go" event. A local butcher donated the meat. Members sold 700 meals, some of which were purchased by businesses that bought meals for their employees. The profits, about 5,500 Swiss francs, will support social services in the community and an educational project for refugee children in South Africa.
