Key Club International Convention attendees

Kimber Wheeler of Craig, Colorado, knows that plenty of Key Club members attend the organization’s annual international convention every year. She is not one of them. So when the Craig Kiwanis Club offered to contribute to Wheeler’s expenses so she could attend the 2019 Key Club International Convention in Baltimore, Maryland, she jumped at the chance.

“Just going one time was an amazing experience,” she told the Craig Daily Press. “Getting to meet all the different people from all over the world who have the same passion for community service and helping people that we don’t even know is way crazy.”

Post-convention, she told the publication, she planned to incorporate what she learned to make a service impact in the Craig area, both through her Key Club and by working with middle school students.

Does your Kiwanis club sponsor a Key Club? If so, consider allocating funds in your 2019-20 budget to help send a student like Wheeler to the 2020 Key Club International Convention, to be held July 1-5 in San Francisco, California.

Why does such support make sense?

  • It will recognize and reinforce the student and club’s own efforts. Key Club encourages members to raise one third of convention costs themselves and receive another third of the funding from their Key Club before requesting a Kiwanis contribution. You’ll be rewarding them for their hard work and initiative.
  • It will foster collaboration between your Kiwanis club and its sponsored Key Club. Ask the convention attendee to report back to both clubs with service and fundraising ideas that you can pursue together.
  • It will help the student enhance leadership skills. Your club sponsors a Key Club because your members believe in shaping the future through developing the world’s next generation of leaders, and the international convention focuses on helping attendees develop such traits.
  • You’ll open up the world to a student who might otherwise never have the opportunity. Some students have never traveled across state lines or met people from other cultures and countries. The international convention offers the perfect chance for teens to broaden their horizons and find commonality with Key Clubbers with different outlooks and opportunities.
